Lorraine Kelly 'terrified' climbing up RRS Discovery ship mast in Dundee

"I'm not good with heights, so it was scary, I was shaking like a leaf.' Lorraine Kelly said she was "shaking like a leaf" as she scaled the mast of the RRS Discovery ship in Dundee, ahead of the daring experience opening to the public later this year. She joined fellow TV presenter Dan Snow in a race up the 25-metre mast on Friday, June 27, with Snow just beating her to the top by a few minutes. The pair then abseiled back to the ground. ‌ The climb aims to recreate the working conditions the ship's original crew faced when it voyaged to Antarctica 124 years ago, albeit they endured harsh weather conditions and no modern safety precautions. ‌ After reaching the top, both stars waved for the cameras below. Snow spoke into the microphone of a camera drone above, with little-to-no fear in his voice. Lorraine later said: 'The experience in general was absolutely terrifying and the only reason I think I got through it was because Dan Snow was doing it as well. 'He looked so calm as he was shimmying up the rigging. That made me feel a bit better, but I'm not good with heights, so it was scary, I was shaking like a leaf, but it's really good to be back on dry land.' Led by the Dundee Heritage Trust, the Discovery Mast Climb will be open for members of the public to experience this autumn. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! The Cutty Sark in London and SS Great Britain in Bristol offer a similar challenge. Lorraine, a patron of the Dundee Heritage Trust alongside Snow, added: 'The Discovery ship is beautiful, she's the symbol of Dundee. I'm obsessed with all things Antarctica, and she went to Antarctica. 'She's an old girl so she needs a lot of maintenance, and obviously that costs a lot of money. This was all about raising awareness of the Discovery and letting everyone in Dundee have a look at her.' ‌ She said the experience also highlighted the country's former ties to the whaling industry, which was abolished in Scotland in 1963. She said: 'Dundee's links with Antarctica and South Georgia are very important, and this whole weekend is really about that. It's about looking back on the whaling industry, which was a big part of the city, and looking forward to the fact that we don't do that anymore – thank goodness – and we're trying to save these beautiful animals, so it's a celebration of the future.' Asked if she would consider such a climb again, Kelly joked: 'I don't think I'll ever do anything like that again. I'll leave that to the experts.'

Aldi launches new "flavour-packed" pizza, fusing classic Italian cooking with Eastern flair

The new pizza will hit shelves across all 109 Aldi stores in Scotland from 3 July, priced at £3.79 for a limited time only Aldi Scotland is turning up the heat this summer with the launch of a brand new Doner Kebab Pizza, following the sell-out success of its Chicken Tikka Pizza earlier this month. Created by Edinburgh -based Cosmos Pizza, the latest addition brings together bold Eastern spices with a traditional Italian base to deliver what Aldi describes as a "flavour-packed meal that you just can't top." ‌ The new pizza will hit shelves across all 109 Aldi stores in Scotland from 3 July, priced at £3.79 for a limited time only. ‌ Aldi became the first supermarket to stock Cosmos' pizzas, and the Chicken Tikka flavour proved an instant hit with customers. The retailer is now encouraging shoppers to move fast if they want to get their hands on the new Doner Kebab version before it sells out too. 'This is history in the baking, as Aldi becomes the first Scottish supermarket to stock Cosmos' new Doner Kebab Pizza,' said Graham Nicolson, Group Buying Director at Aldi Scotland. 'The creativity and craftsmanship of Scotland's food producers never ceases to amaze us, and Cosmos is an excellent example of a locally grown supplier that knows how to cleverly experiment with flavour. 'At Aldi Scotland we're always happy to be the ones who test the market for inventive and quirky flavour creations, and we're confident this new creation will top the list of some of our most popular pizzas ever released.' As the UK's cheapest supermarket for four years running, according to Which?, Aldi is already a firm favourite with bargain hunters. ‌ Alongside its low-cost groceries, it also stocks a wide selection of household items, seasonal goods, and premium-quality Scottish produce from across the country. In fact, Aldi is the only UK supermarket with a dedicated Scottish Buying Department. ‌ It currently works with more than 90 local suppliers and stocks around 450 Scottish products, a commitment that earned it the 'Best for Scottish' award at the 2024 Scotland Food & Drink Excellence Awards, its third win in the category. Recent NFU Shelfwatch surveys ranked Aldi as the top supermarket in Scotland for supporting local produce, and it remains the only retailer to stock 100 percent fresh Scottish pork on all shelves. Over the next two years, it plans to invest £40 million in new stores, with upcoming openings in Arbroath, Baillieston and Kirkintilloch. Billionaire Jeff Bezos marries Lauren Sanchez in £48m Venice wedding

Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos has officially tied the knot with Lauren Sanchez in an impressive £48million wedding bash in Venice, with Hollywood's biggest A-listers looking on. The world's second richest man Jeff Bezos has married his partner Lauren Sanchez in a labish £48million ceremony in Venice. Guests were heard cheering and clapping as the couple exchanged vows, reports the Mirror. ‌ Celebs including the Kardashian-Jenners, Oprah Winfrey and Leonardo DiCaprio. Ivanka Trump were spotted at the lavish event. Guests were welcomed into the event by a gospel choir, who sang Whitney Houston's Higher Love. ‌ All eyes were on bride Lauren as she stunned in a breathtaking long-sleeved gown complete with a dramatic train and stunning white flower detailing. The dress featured floral appliques over a corset style dress. Opera star Matteo Bocelli - son of Andrea Bocelli - serenaded the newlyweds at the reception, performing Elvis Presley's song I Can't Help Falling in Love With You. While the celebrations were in full swing in Venice, it was reported that the pair had actually tied the knot weeks ago. According to a well-placed insider involved in the event planning, they said: 'They have been married for at least a month, more than a month. The marriage is fully legal and took place in America under American law." As the legal union had already taken place, no Italian wedding licence was required. "There is no application for a wedding licence from the couple because it was not required. Whatever happens at the wedding on Friday, it will not be a wedding. ‌ "Under Italian law, it will not be a wedding celebration, any vows said or rings exchanged will have no legal meaning," they told Mail Online. The source added that Bezos himself confirmed the legal marriage and said the couple had arranged a a prenuptial agreement to safeguard his $244 billion fortune. The couple arrived in Venice this week ahead of the impressive event, with a helicopter picking Bezos and his bride-to-be up from the support ship of Bezos' superyacht Koru. The yacht had been anchored off the Croatian coast, and the couple touched down at the Venice Lido. ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Thursday night saw a casual welcome dinner at the 14th century Madonna dell-Orto church. Local sources claimed security is ultra-tight, turning the stunning city into a "fortress-like operation". The ceremony was originally set for the Scuola Grande della Misericordia, but protests from the No Space for Bezos campaign forced a last-minute venue change to the Arsenale shipyard, which activists would struggle to access. Bezos and Sanchez arrived hand-in-hand, with Lauren sporting oversized black sunglasses and a sleek black halterneck dress.

Brad Spencer reveals the Falkirk title message from Brian Graham moments after Patrick Thistle heartbreak

The then-Thistle striker had dealt a hammerblow to the Bairns title hopes - before joining them in the Premiership for the new season Brad Spencer trudged off the pitch with his head spinning and Brian Graham's consoling arm draped round him – but kind words were the last thing on his mind in Maryhill. A stoppage-time sickener from Partick Thistle substitute Terry Ablade had sealed a 2-1 defeat – Falkirk 's third winless clash – putting the title party on ice and giving Livingston a shot at reeling them back in. ‌ The Bairns had looked nailed on for the crown at the outset of April but as the whistle blew at Firhill, Spencer could only stew. ‌ Then came Graham, Thistle's co-boss and the man who had opened the scoring, offering a few words of solace. Spencer's first instinct may have been to tell him where to go – little did he know that place was Falkirk in a summer double deal along with former Celtic keeper Scott Bain. John McGlynn's men held their nerve a week later for title glory and a long-awaited return to the top flight as Spencer, now 29, capped it all by being named PFA Scotland Championship Player of the Year. Looking back, that chat with Graham didn't sting for long – in fact, he's grateful for it now. The vice-skipper said: 'Brian came up to me after the game at Firhill. I was speaking to him before about the Player of the Year and stuff like that. 'He said something about it being a great year for myself and then 'just go on and win it', he's 'desperate for us to win it', we deserve to win it and 'you'll go get the job done next week'. In the end we did. ‌ 'I definitely had different words in my head than those that came out at the time to tell Brian just because I was annoyed at how the game went! 'He was being professional, it was lovely words and in the end there were people who were rooting for us to go out and do the job because we consistently were the best team in the league. It was nice from Brian. ‌ 'Looking back now, it was the best way we could've done it – at home in front of our fans and enjoying the night like that was magic. 'Taking it into the last game obviously wasn't good at times for people's nerves but we always had strong belief in the squadwe would get it done.' Now Spencer reckons the old guard – 37-year-old Graham, 36-year-old Scott Arfield and 33-year-old Bain – can form a solid spine for a young squad stepping into the big time. ‌ He added: 'I've known Brian for a while. Playing against him, you get to chat. 'Scott seems a lovely lad also, another good character the gaffer has picked. He's got a knack of picking good players to have around the dressing room. It would be daft not to lean on their experience. 'They've both been around the game for a long time, along with Scotty. It's an experienced group, compared to last year when we were a wee bit younger. ‌ 'We've got a wee bit of a mixture – we've got pace, we've got experience. It's exciting. 'We had success last year against a couple of Premiership teams and still played our way in those games. At times wehad to sit in, soak up a wee bit more pressure and rely on a wee bit of luck or Nicky (Hogarth) to make saves. 'So it's going to be different. We just need to add different strings to our bow and try to find the best way to win games. ‌ 'The gaffer has always stressed about keeping the continuity and feelgood factor around the place. If you start ripping everything apart, you're starting from the bare bones. 'Whereas we're two, three years into our journey. We know what to expect from the gaffer and Smudger (assistant Paul Smith) which suits a lot of us. 'It has worked. That's how we get the best out of people like myself, Dylan (Tait), the wingers and everybody else. ‌ 'There's no point in coming up and being spooked. It's just about trying to continue what we've done that's got us success.' No one can say Spencer's had it easy as he gets set for his Premiership debut seven years after exiting Kilmarnock without a top-team appearance. The midfielder, who spent his youth career in the States withPortland Timbers and Houston Dynamo, said: 'I've certainly taken longer to get to the Premiership than I'd have liked. 'But everybody's got a different path, there are late developers. I came back from America and I was wet behind the ears, didn't know enough about professional football and playing the men's game. 'It shows there are people out there who just need a chance and they can do well.'

Russell Martin broke my heart but as a Rangers diehard this is how I think he'll fare at Ibrox

Leeds United hero Stuart Dallas has swapped the pitch for the stands as he follows Gers across Europe Stuart Dallas has Follow Followed Rangers across the continent. And the former Leeds ace is convinced that with Russell Martin leading from the front, his Ibrox heroes are now heading back to the promised land. ‌ The retired Northern Ireland defender may be a legend at Elland Road but he grew up idolising the Light Blues. ‌ And since hanging up his boots last year, the 34-year-old has had plenty of spare time to join his big brother Marcus on foreign jaunts cheering on Gers in Europa League action. He was among the thousands of jubilant fans who celebrated last term's memorable away wins over Nice and Fenerbahce and has been a regular at Ibrox too down the years. Now Dallas can't wait to see how far Martin's new-look line-up can make it this season as they begin their Champions League quest with next month's multi-million-pound Panathinaikos clash. Dallas witnessed just how difficult it is to put the breaks on Martin's high-risk passing philosophy himself when he was given a front-row seat during his final injury-hit season at Leeds. He may not have been out on the pitch for the Lillywhites' fateful 2024 play-off final clash but he certainly felt for his team-mates as they were given the runaround by Martin's swashbuckling Southampton side on the day they clinched promotion to the Premier League with victory at Wembley. ‌ And he's vowed to be in among the Ibrox legions again this term as Martin's Rangers set out on the long road back to Uefa's top tournament. 'I think it's a great appointment,' he said. 'I was injured for the play-off final against Russell's Southampton team, but I've come up against his sides before. I'm a big fan of his. 'I know the appointment has caused a bit of divide in the fanbase because of how he fared in the Premier League. ‌ 'But if you give him the right tools, he's a very, very talented manager.' Russell's refusal to budge from his possession-heavy tactical plan cost him his job at St Mary's as Saints' lack of firepower was brutally exposed by their ruthless top-flight opponents. But Dallas expects to see the new Light Blues boss stick to his guns again at Ibrox. ‌ He said: 'He has a clear style of play. He knows exactly what he wants. 'This thing about him not being able to adapt is based on the fact he didn't do so well in the Premier League. 'But the year that Southampton went up, they beat Leeds in the play-off final, in fact they beat Leeds three times that year. ‌ "He was able to change his shape and adapt to different situations. So I think it's a great appointment. I'm excited again to see how he gets on. 'People think it's just passing, passing, passing for no reason, but that is mentally draining a player if you're having to chase the ball. 'I get it. There's a fine line in passing the ball around and doing nothing with it, but Russell Martin knows how to break down a low block. ‌ 'Ninety-five percent of the time in Scotland, you're going to come up against that, bar maybe when you're playing Celtic. 'He takes risks at the back, but with the high risk comes reward as well, doesn't it? I think it's good. ‌ 'Obviously, he's going to need players. Of course, he has a squad that needs an upgrade but again, I'm very excited for how it's going to go.' And Dallas is looking forward to taking in a few more European away days this season. Recalling his recent trips with Gers, the Bluenose from Cookstown said: 'I went to Fenerbahce, I was a Nice as well. Sadly I wasn't in Seville. I was supposed to go to Bilbao, but I was on holiday. ‌ 'But I've done Anfield, Old Trafford, a lot of away games. 'Obviously when you're playing, it's difficult to get up to games at Ibrox. 'But my brother's been a season ticket holder for years and all my pals are big Rangers fans. Going to more games with my brother was always something I said I'd do whenever I retired. ‌ 'It's enjoyable going away. My first game at Ibrox was back in 2002. It was Rangers-Hearts. 'I went with my brother, my mum and my granny. My grandad brought me over to the game. Me and my brother went. "I think we won 2-0. I would have liked to have been able to get more games throughout my career but it just doesn't work out that way. ‌ 'I took my kids up to the Bilbao home game. I drove all the way up there for a 0-0 draw! 'But the penalty save that night was worth it. It will be great to see Rangers back competing on all fronts. 'They need to close that gap to Celtic.'
